Carriage of Firearms

Policy On Firearms

It is the policy of Trailways of New York that in nearly all cases we will not allow for the transport or carriage of firearms. Firearms may not be carried onboard, may not be transported in baggage, and may not be shipped using our Package Express Service.

A “firearm” is any weapon that will, or is designed to, or may be readily converted for use to expel a projectile by the action of an explosive, or the frame or receiver of any such weapon. This includes:

  • Sporting rifles, shotguns, and handguns
  • Handguns of authorized law enforcement officers traveling when not on duty
  • Starter pistols, and flare pistols
  • Antique firearms
  • Silencers/suppressors
  • Paintball guns, airsoft guns, BB guns, and other compressed air guns.

Trailways of New York has two exceptions to the above policy on the carriage of firearms:

  1. Accredited law enforcement personnel are permitted to carry firearms; and
  2. Charters for law enforcement and/or military groups are permitted to carry firearms.

Regardless of the above exceptions, Trailways of New York does not permit customers under age 18 to carry on or check a firearm under any circumstance.

Those persons who are permitted to board with firearms are first required to present photo ID, badge, or a valid firearms license/permit to a ticket agent or driver prior to boarding.

If you are connecting to another carrier with an international or domestic destination, you may need to claim your firearm(s) and ammunition at the final Trailways of New York destination and then follow any and all procedures as set forth by the receiving carrier.

Handguns cannot be transported to or through Canada. Non-restricted hunting rifles or competition firearms do not require specialized documentation. Please call the Canadian Firearms Program at 1-800-731-4000 for additional information on firearms to or from Canada. A U.S. Customs declaration issued before departing the U.S. is required before bringing your firearms back to the United States. We cannot accept rifles, shotguns and other firearms between the United States and Canada without the required documentation.
